BIG BIG BIG NEWS!!!!!!!!!

Can you help raise money for the Red Cross?
Dear Parents,
To conclude our inquiry unit on Natural Processes the Grade 3/4 students have decided that they would like to raise money for the Red Cross, as this is an organisation which plays a key role when natural disasters occur across the world.
As our fundraiser, we will be holding a baking stall on Friday 14th May and will be making various treats to sell at this event.
3/4D will be making lemon slice to sell. We will be baking approximately 125 portions so will need the following:
Ingredients:
• 8 x 250g sweet biscuits (e.g. Marie biscuits)
• 4 x cans of sweetened condensed milk
• 4 x 250g packets of desiccated coconut
• 4 x 500g of butter
• 2 x 1kg packets of icing sugar
• 8 x lemonsEquipment:
• Square tins 24cm x 24cm (or thereabouts)
• Large mixing bowls• Rolling pins
If you are able to support our class by purchasing an item for us to use when baking the biscuits it would be greatly appreciated. Please let me know either through your child’s diary, email (lawerson.kate.m@edumail.vic.gov.au) or in person.
Also, if you would like to help the class when baking these biscuits, we will be making them from 11.30-1pm on Thursday 16th. Again, please let me know if you are able to support.
Many thanks,Kate Lawerson
HERE IS SOME INFORMATION THAT WE LEARNT ABOUT THE RED CROSS WHEN THEY CAME TO VISIT US…
On the 25th of March a Red Cross Volunteer came to talk to us about the
work the Red Cross does locally, nationally and globally.
We learnt that there are 100 million volunteers across 185 countries for the Red Cross. 30,000 of those are from Australia and 8,500 are from Victoria- that is a lot of volunteers!
There are more than 60 Red Cross programs and services across Australia, some of these include:
Save-a-Mate (SAM) Program
The Good Start Breakfast Club
First Aid Training
During a disaster the Red Cross help people in many different ways, these include:
raising money and neccesities through appeals
providing food and water to those that need it
giving people personal support to help them get through their hard time
reconnecting people through phone hotlines and websites
assisting in medical treatment to those that need it
Some interesting facts that we learnt were:
the Red Cross emblem is the third mose recognisable emblem in the world (behind Coke and Macdonalds)
the emblem means ‘don’t shoot’ symbolising protection
the emblem is also the reverse of the Swiss flag, representative of the fact that a Swiss man founded the organisation
other symbols that the Red Cross have are the Red Crescent and the Red Crystal
